Kinetic Sculpture

This is a kinetic sculpture at Goleta Beach. The cone shapes catch the wind and rotate on metal "spokes" or "branches" and occasionally emit little clangs, kind of like the sound of a cowbell. There aren't nearly as many cones on the sculpture as it looks like there is here.

To make this exposure I set up the camera on a tripod and opened the shutter. Over the course of a few minutes, I popped a speedlight (flash) several times while holding it above my head. Each "pop" froze the sculpture in a certain position, gradually building up the photo you see.

Night Shots with Flash

Went down to Goleta beach tonight and played around with my new Nikon SB-24 speedlight. Now I can finally get proper exposures of trees at night....

Lu's Photoshoot, Ellwood

This is my friend Lu. He is quite a character - he's working on his PhD at UCSB, but took a year off to run for public office in Albania (!?) where he is originally from. He asked me to help him get some photos together to help his budding acting career.

Playin Guitar at the Pier

We went down to the wharf the other weekend to go crabbing. We didn't catch anything edible, but we still had a good time. I was experimenting with my EL Wire to pass the time.

Jeremy Spins Fire

Jeremy and I went to Newport beach Saturday night to shoot some fire-spinning under the full moon. J's gotten pretty damn good at the fire poi since our trip around the world.

This was my first attempt at flash photography with an off-camera flash (a Vivitar 283). I'm quite pleased with the results...
