A2M Bookstore Bar, before the storm

A2M Bar

The Arizona half of our A2M Bookstore camp really put together an amazing bar. This was taken on the second day, before we had really made a dent in the supplies. There were over 70 handles of good quality liquor, plus countless cans and bottles of mixers, juices, energy drinks, dozens of lemons and limes, and hundreds of cans of beer. We had three coolers of ice in the bar to keep things cold. We did everything we could to drag as many people as possible over to have a drink. We even put up traffic cones in the street to "force" people over (though the Rangers took exception to that!) and at one point a neighbor took to paddling people if they didn't stop... she would even whack bicyclists and art car drivers... Many tried to tip us or trade things, but we made it clear that this is a GIFT economy, not some kind of barter or exchange. We had to burn a couple dollar bills that were left behind! It's a testament to the sheer scale of the thing that we were still mixing cold drinks for any and all on Saturday evening before the burn.

Clouds and Lightpainting at Leadbetter

Clouds / Lightpainting

It is very rare in Santa Barbara to have clouds at night, especially when there's a full moon out - so I was thrilled tonight to have big puffy clouds drifting across the sky for 2 hours worth of shooting.

I tried out a new light painting idea - I used a small battery powered UV blacklight left over from Burning Man.

Crude Awakening Burn Video

This is absolute insanity. From 200 yards back I was convinced my hair was going to catch fire!

Santa Barbara at Night

Santa Barbara at Night Great conditions out last night. Here's one of the results, taken from the Mesa... check out my Flickr page to see what I was experimenting with.

‘Twas just another fireball…

Smoke trails It's rather common at Burning Man to see tufts, rings, and plumes of black smoke rising in the air. There are dozens of fire-breathing Mutant Vehicles and probably hundreds of massive propane flamethrowers tacked onto them in various ways.
